Biodiversity Net Gain

Biodiversity Net Gain Delivery

WL Straughan delivers practical, on-the-ground Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) works, supporting developers and landowners in meeting statutory requirements while creating lasting environmental value.

We are a delivery contractor, not an ecological consultancy. Our role is to take approved ecological designs and management plans and turn them into well-managed, functioning habitats on the ground. We focus on high-quality habitat creation, enhancement, and long-term land management that is compliant, practical, and sustainable.

A Practical Approach to BNG

WL Straughan brings a delivery-focused approach to Biodiversity Net Gain. We understand the importance of getting the details right on site, coordinating effectively with ecologists, and managing land in a way that balances environmental outcomes with real-world constraints.

Our aim is simple: to create and manage habitats that deliver genuine biodiversity benefits and stand the test of time.

Habitat Creation and Enhancement

Our habitat works are designed to improve condition, increase species diversity, and support a wide range of wildlife.

Grassland enhancement plays a key role in many schemes, with proactive management used to move grassland from poor or moderate condition towards species-rich habitat. This includes careful ground preparation, appropriate seed selection, and long-term management through hay cutting and low-intensity grazing once established.

We also deliver mixed native scrub creation and management, designed to develop varied age structures and resilient vegetation communities. These habitats provide valuable nesting, shelter, and foraging opportunities for birds, mammals, invertebrates, and amphibians.

Hedgerows are created and enhanced using native species to form dense, structurally diverse features that support wildlife movement and provide year-round food resources such as nectar, pollen, and berries.

Long-Term Management

Biodiversity Net Gain is a long-term commitment. WL Straughan supports schemes through ongoing habitat management and maintenance, helping habitats progress towards their target condition over time.

Management is adaptive and responsive, allowing practices to change in line with monitoring results, seasonal conditions, and habitat performance. This approach helps ensure habitats remain resilient, practical to manage, and capable of delivering measurable biodiversity uplift over the long term.

Wetlands, Watercourses and Connectivity

In addition to terrestrial habitats, WL Straughan delivers works that improve aquatic environments and ecological connectivity.

This includes wetland restoration and creation, designed to support biodiversity, improve water management, and increase habitat complexity. We also construct fish passes and undertake watercourse improvements that restore connectivity, allowing fish and other aquatic species to move freely through river systems.

Where projects form part of wider habitat networks, our work contributes to the creation of wildlife corridors and stepping stones that link habitats at a landscape scale, supporting long-term nature recovery.

Design-Led, Evidence-Based Delivery

While we are not consultants, our delivery is informed by baseline site conditions and ecological objectives set out at the design stage.

Soil type, nutrient levels, hydrology, and existing land use all influence how habitats are created and managed. Seed mixes, planting methods, and management techniques are selected to suit site conditions and to support steady habitat development over time.

Where schemes sit within wider wildlife corridors or priority habitat networks, delivery is coordinated to complement surrounding habitats and maximise ecological benefit.

What We Do

We deliver a wide range of Biodiversity Net Gain works across terrestrial and aquatic environments, working alongside ecologists, landowners, and project teams to implement schemes as intended.

Our BNG delivery includes:

  • Enhancement of existing grassland to improve botanical diversity and habitat condition

  • Creation of species-rich grassland using traditional hay meadow management and seasonal grazing

  • Introduction of seed from species-rich donor sources to increase plant diversity

  • Establishment and management of native scrub to provide structure, shelter, and wildlife habitat

  • Creation and enhancement of native hedgerows to strengthen connectivity across the landscape

  • Wetland creation and restoration, including ponds, scrapes, and seasonally wet areas

  • Construction and installation of fish passes to improve river connectivity and aquatic habitat

  • Delivery of wildlife corridors and ecological linkages between existing habitats

  • Ongoing habitat management to ensure habitats establish, mature, and perform as intended within statutory biodiversity metrics, and best practice guidance.
